Although some may still be celebrating the holidays and feeling Christmas cheer, now is the time to dispose of live christmas trees.
Riverside Fire Chief Chad Smothers says live trees don’t last despite frequent hydration, “I would recommend once the holiday season’s over, get rid of it. Get it out of your house because those things aren’t going to live and last forever. Eventually, there will come a point where even with daily watering it’s probably going to start slowly dying off.”
If you don’t wish to part with your tree, one way of disposing it is in your pond for a fish habitat. Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologist Chad Dolan says old christmas trees can be a good habitat for fish, with best placement being in water six to eight feet deep.
