Exterior signage for the new community center was discussed at the recent Kalona City Council meeting.
City Administrator Ryan Schlabaugh presented options and the council decided on an approximate 16-foot by four-foot sign to go on the northeast side of the building facing Highway 22. They also approved a smaller version for near the main entrance. The signs will cost about $17,000 total, under the $20,000 budget. Schlabaugh proposed placing an LED sign that could display messages on the southwest end of the building in the future.
Schlabaugh gave an update on construction, “It’s going well. They’re still on track to have the furnaces here, the heater system on the 23rd of January. It’s going to be a little bit slower these next couple days, they’re working on affixing the steel to the firewall. It’s very tedious in how they have to put that in. As you go out here when you leave, obviously there’s an elevator shaft that’s going up. The electricians, they have a lot roughed out in that area too in the renovation so that’s going well, so knock on wood.”
Representatives from project manager Carl A. Nelson will be giving an update on the project and the budget in January as they will be midway through the 12-month renovation timeline.
