The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Northeast Goose Lake Rebels Friday night in a River Valley Conference inter-divisional doubleheader.
In the girls contest, Mid-Prairie held off a late Rebel charge to score a 57-53 win in overtime. The Golden Hawks got out to a big start, putting together a 12-1 run after the opening tip and enjoyed a 17-6 lead after one quarter. Mid-Prairie held that same advantage at the break, leading 32-21.
Despite their good play and the lead, Mid-Prairie could not put Northeast away, leading 42-31 going to the fourth quarter. The Rebels made their charge to start the final period, going on a 10-0 run. Northeast would tie the game on two occasions with under three minutes to play and take a one point lead with under a minute left. The Hawks found the answer when junior Shae Becker took an inbound pass and spun in the lane for a layup to put Mid-Prairie up one with 30 seconds left. Northeast would be fouled on their final possession with under a second to go and Jaden Smith hit one of two to send it to overtime.
In overtime, Mid-Prairie leaned on experienced veterans like Addie Rath who scored seven in the frame to get the win.
Mid-Prairie was led on the night by Anna Vilovchik with 16 points, Becker finished with 15. With the win, Mid-Prairie is now 2-0 on the year and travels to Regina Tuesday.
The Golden Hawk boys had a tough test against the ranked Rebels and fell by a 70-45 score. Northeast got out to a quick start, scoring the game’s first 10 points and never trailed. Mid-Prairie would climb back within 10-6 but find themselves down 12-6 after one quarter and 33-19 at the half. The Golden Hawks would get as close as 12 in the second half but a Northeast run at the end of the third quarter put the game out of reach as the Rebels feasted on 29 Mid-Prairie turnovers.
On the night the Golden Hawks were led by eight points each from Cale Robertson and Dominick Pickard. With the loss Mid-Prairie is now 0-2 on the year as they travel to Regina Tuesday.
