As people visit family for the holidays many take their pets along for the festivities and Director of PAWS and More in Washington Amber Talbot is offering some tips.

She reminds owners to make sure their pets have identification at all times so that if they get away from you while traveling there’s a greater likelihood of being reunited, “We would definitely encourage everyone to make sure that your animal has identification. At least a collar and a tag that are well-fitted, but better yet even consider doing a microchip. Microchipping is very affordable and very easy to do.” Talbot adds most shelters and veterinary clinics offer microchips.

The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and is inserted under the skin. It can then be scanned and looked up through a database for the owner’s information. Talbot says tags and collars can fall off and then that form of identification is lost. The microchip is about the size of a grain of rice, and is inserted under the skin. Last holiday season, PAWS and More was able to reunite a dog with an owner in Texas through its microchip. PAWS and More offers the service during their regular hours.
