The Washington girls’ basketball team seeks a 2-0 start to the season today when they host Cedar Rapids Washington for a non-conference showdown.

The Demons looked sharp in their season debut last week when they throttled Eddyville-Blakesburg 53-21. Sarah Nacos picked up right where she left off a year ago, pacing the team with 21 points on eight of 17 shooting. Kira Ropp was the other Demon in double figures with 10 points. The Demons got it done on the defensively end creating 19 steals, in part by a stifling 1-2-1-1 press.

That defense will need to be on display against the class 5A Warriors. This is the opener for the Warriors and they are coming off of an 8-15 season. They bring back plenty of experience including their top three scorers that had a combined 32 points per game. Junior Caitlin Riley paced the team with 11 points per contest while shooting 32% from the floor. Jayla Johnson will lead things down low averaging six boards per game last season.

The action gets started at 7 p.m. tonight at Washington High School. Tune into KCII starting at 6:30 p.m. to listen to all of the coverage.
