There are 4,843 registered voters in the City of Washington, and 1,306 cast ballots in Tuesday’s city elections.

A total of 26.97% of those registered voted. Of the 1,306 ballots cast, 355 voted early or absentee. The United Presbyterian Home polling location had 486 voters, and the courthouse for Wards 1 and 4 had 465 voters Tuesday.

Following the results from the auditor’s office, and learning that councilman Jaron Rosien was elected to be the next mayor, current Mayor Sandra Johnson shared what it feels like to be moving forward, “I have mixed emotions. It feels a little bit like the mother that’s sending her firstborn to college, and kind of an empty-nester complex developing in me. It’s like raising kids, you know, I’ve been at it for 18 years on council, so to see those that we feel like maybe we have mentored a little bit pick up the mantel and move forward there’s a sense of gratification for that. But there’s also a sense of separation, you know, and separation anxiety, it feels a little bit like raising a kid.”

Johnson’s term concludes at the end of the year and Rosien will fill the mayoral role in January. Also, Elaine Moore and Fran Stigers were elected to fill seats currently heald by Kathy Salazar and Rosien. Steven Gault was re-elected for the Ward 2 seat.
