It’s been two years since the Washington City Council last considered this project, but now they’re looking again at options – a sidewalk along East Washington Street out to Wiley Avenue and Walmart.

In 2015, an estimate was done using satellite images. At Tuesday’s meeting the council directed staff to reach out engineers. Councilman Jaron Rosien said, “The fact is I think we’ve wanted to do this, people want us to do this, and the way forward is to have it engineered.” And councilman Brendan DeLong also spoke in favor of looking at options, “We need to move forward in my opinion and try to get some quotes from engineers to look at this a little bit closer. … I know it’s wanted.”

City Administrator Brent Hinson explained the engineering study will provide conceptual designs and cost estimates. Hinson estimated the project to cost about $150,000 but figures will be better known after the study. After the survey of the area is conducted the council can also determine whether they’d prefer a sidewalk be installed along East Washington Street north or south of the street.
