A 21-year-old Lockridge man has been charged with homicide by vehicle after a fatal wreck near Coppock when 21-year-old Jacob Nelson lost his life.

According to the Jefferson County Attorney’s Office, Maxwell Francis Spalla has been charged with homicide by vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs, a class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison. He’s also been charged with homicide by vehicle reckless driving, a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

As previously reported on KCII, according to the Iowa State Patrol the wreck occurred at 1:36 a.m. March 4th near the intersection of 110th Street and Yew Avenue in Jefferson County, about two miles south of Coppock. The Ford F-150 truck was eastbound on 110th Street, left the roadway and rolled, coming to rest on its top in the bottom of an embankment. Nelson was not wearing a seatbelt and died. An air ambulance transported 20-year-old Brett Nicholas Scott of Fairfield to the University of Iowa Hospital. Spalla was transported by his parents to the Jefferson County Hospital.

The investigation is ongoing and Spalla has been ordered to appear in District Court on October 2nd. Agencies involved in the investigation include the Iowa State Patrol, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Offie, the Fairfield Police Department, Midwest Ambulance Service, Brighton Fire Department, and the Jefferson County Health Center.
