Sunset Park will play host to the 18th Annual Hospice 5K walk and run Saturday morning.
The annual event is a fundraiser for Hospice of Washington County. Marketing director of the not-for-profit organization Robyn Harvey-Kuntz explains there will be photos of past hospice care patients posted along the trail and they have many families registered for the event, “Enjoy the day thinking of their loved ones, spending it walking on the trail, looking at so many other people who have passed, and understanding they’re not alone. It’s also a day for community members to come out and pay respect to the people that have gone before; they may know somebody and the may be completely surprised that that person is there, that they’re paying respect to them, honoring them.”
She adds there are also serious runners who take part. Prizes will be awarded in each age division and to the overall fastest time, as well as to the oldest and youngest people who participate. The race starts by the rocket slide, goes through Sesquicentennial Park and along a portion of the Kewash Trail. There will also be gift baskets raffled off. The 5K starts at 9 a.m., sign up the morning of starting at 8 a.m. in Sunset Park. Funds raised will be used to help cover the costs of future patients.
