The City of Wellman is taking possession of the Starbeck/Miller property on Main Street this Tuesday.

The owner, Kevin Miller, is selling the property to the city for $1. The city has already done an asbestos inspection and an environmental study, which were funded entirely by the Iowa DNR Brownfields program. In the coming weeks the city plans to do a structural engineer assessment to determine if the building is sound for future use. The assessment is being funded by a Washington County Riverboat Foundation mini grant. City Administrator Kelly Litwiller says several parties are interested in using the space. She says the city can expect future aid from the DNR to abate the asbestos in the building.
