The Sigourney softball team will be taking home some hardware as they tied a school-record by managing fourth place at the class 1A state softball tournament. On Friday, the Savages capped off their season by falling to Westwood 6-3 in the consolation matchup.
Having played until after midnight on Thursday, the Savages had a quick turnaround for their final contest of the season. With rain falling for the entirety of the game, Westwood struck first in the second inning by managing a RBI groundout by Brenna Pike. The Savages immediately answered by plating Madi Schauf on a Megan Stuhr RBI groundout. Both teams traded punches and the game was all notched up at 3-3 heading into the final inning. Westwood delivered the final blow in the sixth when Alyssa Mendenhall hit a three run shot to left field. Due to inclement weather, the game was called after six innings and that allowed Westwood to capture the 6-3 win. The Barthelman sisters added a pair of hits to lead the team offensively. Kendall Streigle pitched her final game in a Sigourney uniform and finished her impressive season with a 3.18 ERA.
With the win Westwood finished the year with a 31-11 record and received third place in the tournament. The Savages capped off their improbable postseason run in fourth place and finished the year 23-13. Pitching is the only area where the Savages will have to reload, as Streigle is the lone senior graduating.
