A slew of new gun law provisions were passed by the Iowa legislature this year.

One new provision in House File 517 states those who hold a permit issued since January 1, 2011 are not required to complete another training course to renew or obtain a new permit to carry weapons. Washington County Sheriff Jared Schneider explains the renewal process, “If your permit was issued after January 1st of 2011 you don’t have to redo the training class, or show proof that you went to a range and shot with an instructor. So you just come and do the paperwork.”

Schneider says the renewal process still requires a background check of the permit holder. The renewal time period has also been extended. Prior to July 1 permit holders had only the 30 days leading up to their permit’s expiration date to renew. Now permit holders have an additional 30 days after their permit expires to renew.
