A developer is looking to create more housing in Washington, but to do so would require a change in the building’s zoning status, which did not pass at a Planning and Zoning Commission meeting this week.
Hobart Historic Restoration wants to revitalize the empty former McCleery Calendar Factory at 628 East 3rd Street by transforming it into multi-family housing and commercial or business space. However, at Tuesday’s commission meeting a motion to approve the zoning change from light industrial to B-2 failed due to a lack of a second and no vote was taken on the matter.
According to a letter to the City from Mary Ottoson with Hobart Historic Restoration, they have already been awarded Workforce Housing Tax Credits and Brownfield/Grayfield Tax Credits, as they’ve been working on this project for nearly three years. The goal was to have the building fully rehabilitated by the end of 2018 or spring of 2019 at the latest.
