Winfield-Mt. Union and Keota opened the class 1A regional softball tournament against one another Monday and it was the Wolves who advanced with a 12-1 win in five innings.

The Wolves opened the scoring with a single run in the first and added to their lead with a pair in the third to go up 3-0. After Keota put a run of it’s own on the board to climb within 3-1, the Wolves exploded with a nine run fourth inning to put the game out of reach and end the contest early in just five innings.

In the game, WMU was led by Hannah Matthews with four RBI. Maci Richardson drove in three on a pair of hits. Madie Anderson recorded the win in the circle, going all five innings, giving up two hits, one run, walking two and striking out nine.

Lexi Purkeypile recorded the RBI for the Eagles with Aaliyah Heldman scoring Keota’s lone run. Purkeypile took the loss in the circle, going all five innings, giving up seven hits, walking 10 and striking out one.

With the loss Keota ends their season at 0-18. WMU improves to 8-15 overall and advances to the regional quarterfinal round of the tournament tonight to take on the Sigourney Savages in Sigourney.
