Farmers and environmentalists are teaming up in Kalona to seek ways of cleaning Iowa’s polluted waterways.
Kalona area farmer Steve Berger and farmer and soil scientist Francis Thicke are giving a free presentation on cover crops Tuesday at the Kalona Public Library. Berger’s presentation will go over his education over time with cover crops and no-till farming, with what works and doesn’t work with the methods. Thicke will give an overview of Iowa’s Nutrient Reduction Strategy, reviewing parts that are often misunderstood. Both no-till farming and cover crops are part of conservation practices the state is urging farmers to adopt to help improve Iowa’s water quality. Farmers and community members from all backgrounds are encouraged to attend the discussion, and audience questions and participation is welcomed.
