The next competition for the Washington Demon girls’ track team will take the squad to Des Moines County today. The Demons will battle athletes from nine schools in the annual Mediapolis Bullette Invitational.

Washington posted a third-place finish Tuesday at the Falcon Relays hosted by West Burlington. The Demons recorded 140 points, 24.5 behind West Burlington-Notre Dame for the Class A title. Washington placed first in five events, including two relays. The 4×200 meter crew of Leah Marek, Isabel Bailey, Jenah Greiner, and Hannah Anderson bested the field by nearly five seconds, clocking a time of 1:51.95. The 800 sprint medley squad of Makenzi Marek, Victoria Barber, Leah Marek, and Bailey recorded a time of 2:03.11, winning the event by two seconds.

Anderson posted first place finishes for Washington in the 100-meter dash and the long jump. Her sprint was clocked at 13.06 seconds, nearly three-tenths of a second faster than the competition. Anderson’s top leap of 17’5.25″ was 5.25 inches farther than the field. It also ranks as the farthest jump recorded in Class 3A so far this season, and is fifth longest in the state regardless of class. Claire Horak registered a first-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.62.

Other teams competing in the Mediapolis Bullette Invitational include Central Lee, Columbus, Highland, Keokuk, Mediapolis, Pekin, WACO, Warsaw and West Liberty. First events will begin at 4:30 p.m.
