A new season of area boys soccer begins today in Washington County. The Washington Demons will travel to rural Riverside for a non-conference battle against the Highland Huskies. Washington won last year’s meeting between county schools, 7-0.

Demon boys soccer coach Sally Hart says a lot of experience is returning from last season’s 2-11 campaign after graduating only two seniors. Hart adds the team will be led by captains John Dillon, Kyle Anderson and Thomas Zimmer. The team also brings back its top four goal scorers. Anthony Torres, Julio Salgado-Hernandez, and Caleb Suchan recorded five goals each, while Matteo Hernandez found the back of the net four times.

Highland returns multiple players from last year’s 3-11 campaign. Mat Hoenig is back after scoring a team-best three goals. Patrick Wood made 145 saves in goal, the most in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North.

The match is set to begin at 5 p.m. at Highland High School.
