Four Washington Demon wrestlers closed their season Saturday with medals around their necks. Washington was represented by five wrestlers in the Class 2A Iowa State Individual Wrestling tournament last week at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.

Trey Van Weelden’s (152) final state-run featured a trip to the state title match. His opening match ended with a 10-2 major decision win against Woodward-Granger’s Austin Scharlau. A pair of decision victories against Osage’s Derek Fox (4-2) and Denver-Tripoli’s Cael Krueger (5-4) advanced Van Weelden to the title match. He lost the championship by a 7-0 decision to South Tama’s Isaac Judge.

Kyle Anderson (126) closed his high school wrestling career with a sixth-place finish. He opened the tournament with a 3-1 decision loss to Atlantic’s Chase McLaren. He recorded three straight decision victories in consolation matches over Clarion-Goldfield-Dows’ Connor Johnson (4-1), Anamosa’s Morgan Rowley (7-0), and South Tama’s Brady Fritz (7-6) to earn a spot in the medal round. Chariton’s Gabe Ruepke handed Anderson a 17-2 technical fall loss in the consolation semifinals. The fifth place match saw Iowa Falls-Alden’s Dante Tacchia win by 5-0 decision.

Austin Hazelett (145) also ended his high school wrestling career in sixth place. He lost his initial match against Cherokee-Washington’s Matt Stines by a 4-3 decision. He tallied a three-match winning streak in the consolation bracket featuring a major decision over Pocahontas Area’s Clayton Reis (14-2), a 7-4 decision against Winterset’s Justin Smith, and a pinfall (1:22) over Ballard’s Tate Battani. Stines and Hazelett had a rematch in the consolation semifinals and Stines won by pinfall in 2:45. Hazelett closed his wrestling career with a 6-3 decision loss to Creston-Orient-Macksburg’s Mitchel Swank.

Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160) concluded his season in seventh place. He lost his first match by 5-1 decision to New Hampton’s Ryan Gorman. He answered with a pair of wins in the consolation bracket including a pinfall (5:47) against Humboldt’s Gus Arnold and a 4-2 decision against Ballard’s John Fulk. Prairie City-Monroe’s Lucas Roland handed Westphal-Edwards’s a 3-1 decision loss in the third consolation round. He came back to win the seventh-place match by 8-1 decision over Albia’s Kyle Sinnott.

Karlton Skubal (195) began the tournament with a pinfall loss to West Liberty’s Bryce Esmoil in 5:47. He advanced past the first round consolation with a 57-second pinfall victory over Central Lyon/George-Little Rock’s Austin Winkel. Creston-Orient-Macksburg’s Jackson Mikkelsen ushered Skubal out of the tournament with a 3-2 decision loss.
