The regular season ended on a sour note for the Highland Huskies girls’ basketball team (14-7). The Huskies, who won 14 of their first 15 games this winter, but ended their regular season with six straight setbacks. Highland will look to return to winning form tonight when they face the Danville Bears (13-9) in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A Region 8 tournament. The teams met twice during the regular season with each school tallying one win.

Four of Highland’s six losses to end the regular season were decided by six points or less. The Huskies latest setback came against Danville, 44-30, in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference shootout on February 4. Highland played without point guard Kelsey Hora due to injury, who leads the squad with 377 points scored this winter. Aly Stokes averaged a double-double during the regular season, 12.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game. Highland won the first meeting versus Danville, 43-35, on January 19. Highland had a bye in the first round.

Danville advanced to the regional quarterfinals after a 50-43 victory over the Columbus Wildcats (11-11). Six players have recorded more than 100 points this season, led by McKenzie Speer with 154. Alyssa Pfadenhauer tops the team with 136 rebounds and ranks second on the team in scoring with 145 points. The Bears enter tonight’s game winning four of their last five games.

Tonight’s winner will advance to Friday’s regional semifinal at Highland High School against the winner of Mediapolis (16-6) versus Sigourney (18-4). Tip-off between Highland and Danville is set for 7 p.m. at Highland High School.
