The Iowa Mennonite girls basketball team saw their season come to an end Thursday in the first round of the class 1A tournament, falling to the HLV Warriorettes 51-48 in overtime.
Defense ruled the first half with HLV leading 7-4 after one quarter and 15-8 at the halftime break. The Warriorettes put together a third quarter run to stretch the lead as large as 14. It was 28-16 HLV going to the fourth quarter. In the final frame IMS and Suzanna Yoder exploded. Iowa Mennonite put up 26 points in the quarter, including 17 from Yoder alone. She gave IMS their first lead of the game with under a minute to play in regulation at 40-39. The Warriorettes Brooke Kuesel answered with a three point play to put HLV back up 42-40. On the game’s final possession, IMS forward Alyssa Hershberger was fouled with six seconds left, needing to hit both free throws to tie. She calmly hit both, HLV missed two shots at the buzzer to win the game and it went to overtime. In overtime, HLV outscored IMS 9-6. Trailing by three with eight seconds left IMS had one chance to tie and send the game to double overtime but a three point attempt came up short.
Suzanna Yoder led IMS in the loss with 25 points, Alyssa Hershberger added 12. IMS will lose one senior, Calli Shaw, to graduation. With the loss IMS ends their season at 0-19. HLV advances to Tuesdays regional quarterfinal at No. 1 Springville.
