A BLC, or behavior learning center, is being created for the elementary schools in the Washington School District. Superintendent Jeff Dicks explained at Wednesday’s school board meeting that there is a need for a space similar to the high school’s BLC. He says, “We will have a place for those high level behaviors that just aren’t succeeding … Our staff aren’t equipped, they’re burdened with too many bodies and that doesn’t work. So, I’m excited it about it because of what it will do not only for those kids, but also our regular ed. classrooms that no longer have the distractions.”

Staff estimates five students would use the elementary BLC, which would be open to kindergarten through fifth grade. Dicks said he wants to help those students get back to learning in an environment that works. The BLC space will likely be at Lincoln Elementary and will be funded with special education dollars. The details of the plan will be presented at next month’s school board meeting.
