The final tuneup before the postseason happens today for the No. 5 Washington Demon wrestling team (26-1). Several Demon wrestlers will travel to Fairfield High School for the annual Southeastern Iowa Classic. Wrestlers from Albia, Centerville, Chariton, Clarke, Davis County, Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Keokuk, Knoxville, Mount Pleasant, and Twin Cedars will grapple in the tournament. Washington concluded regular season dual competition Thursday in Oskaloosa and split a pair of grapples with the Indians(6-16) and the Williamsburg Raiders (20-4). The Demons scored points on two pinfalls, three major decisions, a decision, and three forfeits to best the Oskaloosa Indians, 45-24. Kyle Anderson (126) and Andrew Waite (138) posted second-period pins for Washington. Bonus points were hard to come by for Washington versus Williamsburg. The Demons tallied four decision victories and three major decisions wins as they dropped their first dual of the season, 31-24. Anderson (126: 15-2), Alex Latcham (132;12-0), and Tristin Westphal-Edwards (160; 9-0) score major decisions for Washington.
The latest Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association ranked the Demons as the No. 5 dual team in Class 2A wrestling. Washington was informed this week that they will be a host site for the regional dual tournament on February 7. The Demons must finish in the top two of next week’s sectional tournament to qualify for the event. First grapples of today’s Southeastern Iowa Classic are set for 10 a.m. at Fairfield High School.
