The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys and girls basketball teams split a River Valley Conference doubleheader Friday night in Wellman against the West Branch Bears.
The No. 15 ranked Mid-Prairie girls held off West Branch 56-49 for their eighth win in a row. Mid-Prairie started the game on an 8-2 run and held a 18-7 lead after one quarter and was up 33-20 at the halftime break. The Golden Hawks would lead by as many as 14 in the third quarter before West Branch put together their run. The Bears cut the Golden Hawk lead to 41-35 going to the fourth quarter. In the final frame, the Bears would get as close as one point, but Mid-Prairie never relinquished the lead. With the score 50-49 Golden Hawks with two and a half minutes left, Mid-Prairie closed on a 6-0 run to finish the win. The Golden Hawks were led by 14 points from Ali Butters, 12 from Shae Becker and 10 apiece from Addie Rath and Ireland Hostetler. Mid-Prairie is now 9-3 on the year.
In the nightcap West Branch roared past the Golden Hawk boys 77-41. The Bears led 21-8 after the first quarter, aided by 14 Mid-Prairie turnovers in the frame. The Golden Hawks committed 29 total turnovers in the contest. The Bears continued to pull away, leading 48-19 at the half. In the second half West Branch enacted the continuous clock two minutes into the third quarter. They would lead by as many as 42 before getting the victory by 36. The Golden Hawks were led by Kyle Miller’s 10 points on the night, including one dunk. With the loss Mid-Prairie falls to 3-9.
