The City of Wellman is in the midst of a sewer system improvement project, and has received aid in the form of a loan and a grant. The loan was a State Revolving Fund loan from the Iowa Finance Authority and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources in the amount of $439,000. Wellman was one of 18 Iowa communities that received a loan through the program, which provides low-cost construction financing for water quality initiatives. An additional $475,000 was provided to the project from a Community Development Block Grant. Together, the loan and grant provided enough funding to cover the $911,510 project for the city.

Last year the DNR informed the city they needed to make improvements to their sewer system. The improvements center around a ultraviolet disinfection system that will help sterilize the waste water in the city before it returns to the rivers. Wellman officials say the DNR requires the improvements to be completed by April, and they believe they are on schedule to meet that deadline.
