A new apartment complex in Mt. Pleasant will be constructed using the aid of a $1 million loan from the Iowa Finance Authority Board of Directors. The loan is low-interest and was made through the Workforce Housing Loan program, which provides financial assistance in the form of low-cost repayable loans to cities and counties. The money will assist the city in building the Heather Branch Estates, which will include 24 rental units. The city has seen an increased demand for housing as a result of an increased workforce in the city.
Over the next five years, Henry County and Mt. Pleasant officials anticipate needing an additional 900 housing units throughout the county to meet the demand. They believe this loan and the new apartment complex it will help provide are the first step towards meeting the workforce housing need. The Iowa Finance Authority accepts Workforce Housing Loan applications on an ongoing basis until funds are exhausted. When accepting or declining loan requests, they consider annual job growth, local contributing financial effort, and employer investment in the proposed housing. The loans have a one percent interest rate with a maximum term of 20 years.
