The Iowa Mennonite boys and girls basketball teams hosted the Wapello Indians and Arrows for double header action heard on AM and FM KCII Friday night at Hillcrest Union in Kalona.
The IMS girls fell to Wapello by a 57-35 final score. The first half was controlled by the two defenses, forcing a combined 21 turnovers. IMS trailed 13-11 after the first quarter and IMS foul trouble helped the Arrows push ahead 28-18 at the half. In the second half the Arrows maintained control of the game and stretched the lead to 20 in the fourth to seal the win. Karlee Carey led all scorers with 21 points for Wapello. Suzanna Yoder led IMS with 20 points. With the loss IMS is now 0-2 on the season.
The Iowa Mennonite boys scored a thrilling 63-60 win over Wapello at home. The victory is the first of the year for IMS. Wapello led early but IMS grabbed the lead at 17-15 after one quarter and despite several pushes from the Indians, would never give it up. IMS led 35-28 at the halftime break and stretched their lead to 10 three different times in the second half but were unable to put Wapello entirely away. After the Indians cut the lead to 61-60, IMS senior Nick Yutzy stepped to the line with 10 seconds left in the game and hit both free throws to give IMS a 63-60 lead. Iowa Mennonite got the defensive stop they needed for the win as Gage Witte’s three point attempt to tie the game came up short. Yutzy led all scorers with 23 points. Cole Ours and Cole Yoder each had 10. With the win, IMS is now 1-1 on the year. They will next be in action Tuesday when they travel to Highland.
