Two Southeast Iowa Super Conference schools will open the girls’ basketball season tonight in Lone Tree. The Lady Lions begin their new campaign at home versus the Danville Bears. Lone Tree won last year’s meeting, 45-26.
Lone Tree was among the area’s most improved teams last winter, winning seven additional games over the previous season. Strong defense was attributed to the squad’s 15-win season after holding opponents to 37.3 points per game. The Lady Lions return their top three scorers from last season, including first team all-conference performers Madison Forbes and Elena Sieverding. Forbes, Sieverding, and Riley Warson combined to score 628 of the team’s 963 points. The three also recorded more than 80 rebounds and 35 steals.
It was a mediocre season last year for Danville, winning 10 of 21 games. Emma Jarrett is among the top returners for Danville. She secured a team-best 125 rebounds and her 99 points scored ranked third. Grace Grothe is back as the team’s leading scorer, accounting for 197 points as a sophomore.
Tip-off of the varsity game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Lone Tree High School.
