Iowa Mennonite School is performing the play “Those Crazy Ladies in the House on the Corner” this weekend, and the three stars of the show are excited for their classmates and the public to see the production. The story focuses on three elderly sisters, played by sophomore Gretta Rempel, junior Emma Beachy, and senior Nick Yutzy. Yutzy plays Maggie Brown, the silliest of the sisters, and he said it was a fun challenge to play against his gender. The vocal work in particular was difficult, because speaking in falsetto proved tough on his voice. However, he says he got used to it, and it became fun to have an alter ego.
Rempel is still relatively new to the stage, and plays Lydia Van Horn, the mediator of the sisters. She says this is her first major speaking role at IMS, and while she’s nervous about her first big part, she’s excited for the opportunity. Beachy plays Dora Miller, the sarcastic sister who’s often at odds with Yutzy’s Maggie character. She used Dorothy from “The Golden Girls” as inspiration. Beachy is anxious to see all of their hard work pay off this weekend, saying, “I’m excited. I mean, drama is always a lot of fun. I love performing, I love the shows, so I’m really pumped.”
“Those Crazy Ladies” will be performed in Celebration Hall on Saturday, November 5th at 7 p.m., and Sunday, November 6th at 3 p.m. It’s being directed by IMS alumni Megan Miller and Allison Yoder. Tickets can be purchased by calling the office at 656-2073. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for students.
