The Washington Demon football team (5-2 overall) returned to winning form at Case Field last night, defeating the West Burlington Falcons, 49-7. As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, Washington jumped out to a six touchdown lead in the first half as the Demons scored points in a multitude of ways.

Washington posted three touchdowns in each of the first two quarters. Running back Jack Redlinger opened the scoring 1:39 into the game on a 26-yard touchdown run. Washington’s defense then made their mark on the game with two interception returns for touchdowns in the opening frame. Linebacker Tanner Murphy had a 16-yard interception return for touchdown for a 14-0 Washington advantage with 5:43 remaining. Cornerback John Sands made it a three touchdown lead for Washington on a 46-yard pick six with 2:58 left in the first quarter.

All three touchdowns scored by the Demons in the second quarter came on the ground. With 6:23 left in the first half, running back Tristan Westphal-Edwards made the score 28-0 on a five-yard touchdown run. The score became 35-0 with 2:45 remaining in the half as quarterback Javionn Willis found the endzone on a 23-yard keeper. Washington capped off their first half scoring 19 seconds later, converting a West Burlington fumble into a seven-yard touchdown run for David Mares.

Washington’s scoring concluded late in the third quarter. Wide receiver Jacob Hall recorded his first varsity touchdown on a 16-yard pass from Cade Hennigan to make the score 49-0 with 2:12 remaining. West Burlington’s only score came with 7:54 remaining in the contest. Fullback Luke Shipley ran into the endzone from four yards out to avoid the shutout.

The victory improves Washington’s overall record to 5-2 and 3-2 in district play. The Demons will continue their district season next Friday in Oskaloosa, battling the Indians (5-2 overall). Oskaloosa smashed the Keokuk Chiefs last night, 61-13.
