The speed limit on 305 Street, or West Columbus Street, on the west side of Crawfordsville will soon be changing. The Washington County Board of Supervisors discussed the speed limit at the request of the Crawfordsville City Council, which wants the speed limit to be 35 miles per hour within city limits. Washington County Engineer Jacob Thorius said a traffic study was completed in July on that stretch of road that does not support slowing down the speed limit. Currently part of West Columbus Street is 55 miles per hour in city limits.
The county has a 28E agreement with the city to take care of the road, so any formal action on the speed limit changing has to be approved by the county supervisors. Supervisor chairman Richard Young shared his suggestion is to have the speed limit be 35 miles per hour within city limits on that road and 55 miles per hour once you’re outside of the limits. The supervisors voted unanimously to have an ordinance be drafted and considered at a future Washington County Board of Supervisors meeting to make the change proposed by Young official.
