With harvest season in progress, many farmers have tanks of anhydrous ammonia in their fields for use as fertilizer. However, as Washington County Sheriff Jerry Dunbar says, some people attempt to steal the chemical for use in methamphetamine production. While he said there haven’t been as many cases of theft recently, farmers and passersby should still be on alert. People should look out for instances where trucks or lights are around anhydrous tanks and don’t appear hooked up to it. If they receive any calls about suspicious activities at night, Dunbar promises the sheriff’s department will investigate it. He added, “If it’s nothing, it’s nothing. But we’d rather try to be a step ahead of them, instead of behind them.” After the corn and soybean harvest, if people see any suspicious activity around a tank in a field, Dunbar advises people to not hesitate to report it.
