Koch Fertilizer held an emergency drill Thursday at their rural Washington terminal to practice response roles should an accident ever occur. Larry Smith, Washington and Keokuk Counties Emergency Management Coordinator, explains the full scale drill simulated a rupture of a natural gas supply line. The collaborative effort included Koch Fertilizer, Washington County Local Emergency Planning Committees, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Washington County E911, the secondary roads department, Washington County Ambulance, Muscatine Regional HAZMAT, Wellman Fire Department and Wellman Ambulance. Smith added the goals of the drill were to demonstrate the use of the incident command system in compliance with Federal National Incident Management System, conduct decontamination procedures, identifying hazardous materials, interaction of responding agencies, and the ability to recognize and perform at the Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response Standard Level.
