Three matches into her junior volleyball season, Sigourney’s Leah Carter achieved a notable milestone. Carter and the Savages (0-3 overall) opened the season Monday at the WACO Volleyball tournament, competing in pool play against three other regional schools. The Savages left Wayland winless. The Savages pushed the Pekin Panthers to three games before falling (21-19, 11-21, 10-15). Sigourney lost in straight sets to West Burlington (18-21, 11-21) and Wapello (6-21, 15-21).
A bright spot for Sigourney was the play of Carter, who led the team with 14 assists. Chris Carter, Leah’s mom and head volleyball coach, told KCII Sports she needed six assists prior to the WACO tournament to reach 1,000 for her varsity career. Leah Carter facilitated on 482 points as a sophomore, tallying 511 assists during her initial varsity season in 2014.
The Savages return to the court on Tuesday, hosting the Pekin Panthers in a non-conference match. First serve is set for 7 p.m. at Sigourney High School.
