Three week into the season and the Highland Huskies softball team (8-3 overall) finds themselves back in the Iowa Girls’ High School Athletic Union’s top 15 rankings. The latest IGHSAU poll was released last Friday, and the Huskies were rated as the 13th best team in Class 2A.
Highland earned the ranking by winning their first seven games of the season, including a 12-7 victory over No. 15 Jesup (8-9 overall) last Wednesday. Since the newest poll’s been released, the Huskies have lost three of their last four games. Highland suffered their first setback of the season Friday in West Burlington, a 11-8 loss to the Falcons (5-14 overall).
Two of Highland’s three losses came during this weekend’s Calamus-Wheatland softball tournament. The Huskies opened up the event Saturday with a 4-2 win over the Camanche Indians (4-7 overall). Highland closed the tournament with losses to No. 7 Northeast Gooselake (12-2 overall) of Class 2A, 9-2, and No. 7 Calamus-Wheatland (10-7) of Class 1A, 9-8.
The Huskies return to the diamond tomorrow, traveling to Packwood for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game versus the Pekin Panthers (5-4 overall).
