The City of Mount Union has begun the process of unincorporation. Mayor John Marek said a resolution of intent was passed by the city council, which puts in motion the process to turn the city into an unincorporated community. Swedesburg in Henry County or Rubio in Washington County are examples of unincorporated communities.

There are many reasons why the city of fewer than 100 wishes to unincorporate. Marek explained the property taxes would drop 10%, as the county taxes are lower than city taxes. Second, they’ll have better law enforcement, because currently the sheriff’s department can only respond to emergencies and traffic violations in the city. Third, and most importantly according to Marek, residents should stop fighting amongst themselves. He believes if you take away the biggest thing they fight over, the city’s money, they may still not like each other but at least they can get along.

He also said the cost to run the city is surpassing the city income, and the city is running out of money. Additionally, the city is in debt to several sources including Regional Utility Service Systems. All of the city’s debts would be paid during the process of unincorporating. Other recent cities in Iowa to become unincorporated are Center Junction in Jones County in 2015 and Mount Sterling in Van Buren County in 2012.
