When you dial 911 there is always someone there to answer it, but right now local communications staff is under stress due to low staffing levels. Due to being understaffed, the Washington County Board of Supervisors approved adjusting the department’s procedure for compensation time so the employees won’t lose it. Supervisor Jack Seward said they’ve had some employees leave for higher paying opportunities and they are four employees short. There is some strain on the veteran members of the department due to the necessity to staff the department 24 hours every day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Cara Sorrells, director of the E911 center says they don’t have enough staff to allow for vacation time to be taken now. They’ll revisit the compensation time procedure by the end of the year and reassess it based on staffing levels at that time.
