The opening night of the high school softball season pitted two Washington County schools against one another.As heard on FM 106.1 and KCIIRadio.com, the Washington Demons (0-1 overall) began the regular season in rural Riverside, squaring off against the Highland Huskies (1-0 overall). Highland manufactured six runs in the first four innings, winning the county matchup, 7-3.
Huskies senior Cheyann Adamson scored three of Highland’s runs, reaching base on a pair of fielding errors and a single. Freshman Megan Hoenig pitched a complete game, earning the victory by allowing three runs on five hits, walking one and striking out four. Hoenig helped her cause offensively, driving in two runs on a pair of singles.
Washington scattered four hits offensively, scoring one run in the second inning and two in the sixth. Sophomore Brooke Stout went one for three at the plate, smashing a second inning double to score a run. Freshman Haylee Wilson scored a run and drove in another at the plate. Wilson was the Demons’ starting pitcher Monday, taking the loss by allowing six runs on eight hits and striking out three in three innings. Freshman Molly Sparks relieved Wilson in the fourth inning, allowing one run on four hits and striking out one in the final three innings.
The win propels Highland to a 1-0 record, while the loss drops Washington to 0-1. The Huskies return to the diamond tonight, hosting the Van Buren Warriors in a Southeast Iowa Super Conference game. Washington will next be in action tomorrow night, hosting the Columbus Wildcats in a non-conference contest.
