The area team with the most representation at this year’s Iowa Boys’ and Girls’ State Track Meet is the Winfield-Mount Union Wolves. The Class 1A District 10 boys champions are participating in nine events at the blue oval this week in Des Moines.
Senior Garret Baker highlights the sprinting events for the Wolves. Baker was the district champion in the 100 meter dash, clocking the performance at 11.67 seconds. In the 200 meter dash, junior Bryce Robison joins Baker in the 24-person field, qualifying for the event as two of the top 12 non-automatic times in the state.
Senior Ross Vantiger represents the Wolves in the 400 meter hurdles, claiming the district championship with a time of 58.97 seconds.
Senior John Quinn is featured in three distance events. He will be joined by W-MU junior Gavin Bencze in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs, qualifying for the events as two of the top 12 times in Iowa. Quinn is also taking part in the 800 meter run, taking the district title with a time of 2:04.84.
The Wolves qualified for a pair of relay events. W-MU’s 4×100 meter relay squad of senior Zach Davis, Baker, Robison, and Vantiger claimed the district championship, completing one lap around the track in 44.41 seconds. The Wolves 4×200 meter relay team of Vantiger, freshman Brandon Snowden, junior Broc Mullin, and senior Garret Baker clocked a time of 1:35.59, making the state meet as one of the top 12 times in Iowa.
Finally, Davis is the lone W-MU representation in the field events. He will compete in the boys’ long jump after his leap of 20’10.25″ was among the best 12 non-district championship performances in the state.
The Iowa Girls and Boys State Track Meet is being held Thursday through Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.
