Here are the results so far from day one of the Iowa Girls and Boys State Track and Field Meet in Des Moines.
8:15 p.m. update
Two area girls track teams participated in the Class 1A shuttle hurdle relay. The WACO Warriors crew of junior McKenna White, junior Halle Kissell, sophomore Kiana Miller, and junior Kasey Sutton clocked a time of 1:12.98, placing 17th out of 24 teams. The Sigourney Savages group of sophomore Autum Barthelman, freshman Sloane Magill, sophomore Leah Carter, and junior Addison Schroeder were disqualified from the preliminary race. Highland junior Kelsey Hora was disqualifed in the girls’ Class 1A 400 meter dash.
Highland freshman Aly Stokes took home a medal in the Class 1A girls’ long jump. Her best leap was measured at 16’2″, the seventh best mark in the field. Stokes earned the Huskies one team point.
7:30 p.m. update
Iowa Mennonite school junior Drake Brezina participated in the Class 1A 400 meter dash. His quarter mile run was clocked at 53.76 seconds, the 23rd best performance.
6:45 p.m. update
Two area sprinters will compete in the finals of the Class 1A boys’ 200 meter dash Saturday. WACO senior Bryce Achen had the fourth best qualifying time at 22.63 seconds, while W-MU junior Bryce Robison was clocked at 22.96 seconds, the sixth fastest time in the preliminary field. W-MU senior Garrett Baker was disqualified from the 200 meter dash.
5:05 p.m. update
Sigourney sophomore Autum Barthelman has qualified for the finals of the Class 1A girls’ 100 meter dash. She crossed the finish line in 13.01 seconds, the third best time in the preliminary race. WACO senior Angel Frier also competed in the preliminary race of the girls’ 100 meter dash. Her time of 13.72 seconds was the 21st best in the field.
4:45 p.m. update
WACO junior Mayme Hihn is done throwing in the Class 1A girls’ shot put competition. Her best throw of 29’11.25″ ranked 23rd in the field. W-MU senior Garrett Baker has advanced to in the Class 1A boys’ 100 meter dash. His sprint was clocked in 11.37 seconds, the fourth fastest preliminary time.
4:15 p.m. update
Highland senior Keiffer Sexton claimed the Class 1A 3200 meter championship. His two mile run of 9:45.96 is his personal best finish, topping the field by less than a second. W-MU senior John Quinn came in seventh place in the 3200 meter run, clocking a time of 10:09.81. W-MU junior Gavin Bencze crossed the finish line in 13th place in 10:24.55. Finally, Keota sophomore Turner Klein posted a two mile time of 10:47.52, the 24th best finish.
Lone Tree junior Jovonte Squires is the Class 1A long jump state champion. His top leap was measured at 22’4.75″is a new school record, edging the field by two-and-a-half inches. Sexton and Squires earn 10 points for their respective schools. Highland junior Bill Burton had a top eight performance in the long jump competition. He vaulted himself 20’3″ placing eighth in the field and earning one team point for Highland.
3:10 p.m. update
A pair of boys shuttle hurdle relay teams competed in the Class 1A preliminary race. The WACO relay team of sophomore Beau Beckler, junior Jackson Roth, freshman Colton Horak, and senior Bryce Achen clocked a time of 1:02.02, the 14th best finish. The Lone Tree Lions relay squad of senior Caleb Christian, sophomore Brock Smith, junior Niko Gosnell, and junior Jovonte Squires finished two-tenths of a second behind the Warriors for 15th place.
2 p.m. update
Wapello sophomore Tiffany Parsons participated in the Class 2A girls’ 400 meter dash. Her quarter mile run was clocked at 1:00.81, the 15th best finish. Pekin sophomore Isaiah Wittrock took home a medal in the Class 2A boys’ 400 meter dash. Wittrock completed one lap around the track in 51.31 seconds, the eighth best performance and earning the Panthers’ one point in the team standings. Pekin freshman Cameron Millikin also took part in the boys’ 400 meter run, posting the 20th best finish at 52.86 seconds.
1:20 p.m. update
Mid-Prairie junior Levi Duwa set a new school record in the shot put competition. His best throw of 57’9.5″ was the third best in Class 2A, and broke his own school record by 4.5 inches. The performance earned the Golden Hawks six team points.
1 p.m. update
Washington senior Michael Ellingson didn’t clear 5’9″ in the boys’ high jump competition, leaving him without a result. A pair of area athletes competed in the preliminary race of the Class 2A girls’ 200 meter dash. Pekin junior Kaylee Linder finished in 21st place, clocking a time of 27.45 seconds. Mid-Prairie senior Alex Rath crossed the finish line in 27.68 seconds, the 22nd best time.
12:45 p.m. update
The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk boys track team came away with a top 10 finish in the 4×800 meter relay. The crew of sophomore Peyton Miller, junior Andrew Schwartz, freshman Quinn Schmidt, and senior Luke Sigler crossed the finish line in 8:19.55, the 10th best time.
12:30 p.m. update
Pekin senior Shelbie Williams earned a medal in the Class 2A shot put. Williams top throw of 39’10” was the fifth best in the field. Williams earned four team points The Pekin boys 4×800 meter relay team of sophomore Chandler Eckley, sophomore Sam Roth, senior Austin Fariss, and junior Ryan Millikin also came away with a medal. Their race time was clocked at 8:14.49, the sixth best finish and earned the Panthers’ three points.

Two area girls track teams competed in the finals of the 4×800 meter relay. The Mid-Prairie Golden Hawk’s crew of junior Abby Tornow, junior Greta Schmidt, senior Hannah VanRoekel, and senior Maddi Zahradnek came away with the 21st best finish at 10:19.71. The Pekin Panthers team of junior Shea Dahlstrom, senior Peyton Lock, senior Taylor Lock, and junior Mackenzie Martin came in 22nd place, finishing with a time of 10:21.55.
11:30 a.m. update
Washington senior Kelly Wheeler competed in the preliminary race of the Class 3A girls 100 meter dash. Her sprint was clocked at 13.35 seconds, the 18th best performance. Pekin junior Kaylee Linder has qualified for Saturday’s Class 2A girls 100 meter dash final. Linder clocked her preliminary race time at 13.24 seconds, the eighth and final qualifying time.
Columbus Mauricio Ramirez has advanced to the final race of the Class 2A boys 100 meter dash. His time of 11.39 seconds was the fifth fastest qualifying time. Pekin junior Tyler Copeland also competed in the preliminary race of the Class 2A boys 100 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 11.87 seconds for 18th place.

Mid-Prairie sophomore Floyd Evans finished in the middle of the Class 2A 3200 meter field. His run was clocked at 10:17.59, the 12th best performance in the field. Pekin junior Malcom Myers crossed the finish line in 10:18.94, placing 13th out of 24 runners.
10 a.m. update
Mid-Prairie sophomore Anna Hostetler took third place in the girls’ 3000 meter run, finishing the nearly two mile race in 10:24.42 seconds. Hostetler earned the Golden Hawk’s six team points. Pekin senior Gwynne Wright finished in fourth place in her final 3000 meter run, crossing the finish line in 10.27.58. Wright earned the Panthers’ five points.
9:45 a.m. update
The Washington Demon girls’ 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle relay team will have their state run end in the Class 3A preliminary race. The group of Carolan Hoffman, Emma Wood, Mackenzie Knutson, and Jessie Buchholz clocked a time of 1:09.98, the 15th fastest in the 24-team field.
The Columbus Wildcat girls’ 4×100 meter shuttle hurdle relay team were unable to qualify for Saturday’s Class 2A final. The crew of Anna Hamilton, Monaye Matthews, Angie Byas, and Shaina Boyd finished their race in 1:33.18, the 23rd best performance.
