One safety precaution for bicycle owners is making sure your bike is road ready. Jared Schneider, Chief Deputy of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, recommends putting your bike through a safety inspection before riding it this summer. An inspection should include a check of the seat, handlebars, brakes, pedals, and the chain. Schneider says brakes are the most overlooked part of the inspection, and stresses its importance in helping kids stop their bike while on the road.

There are two things to be mindful of when checking the tires. The first is to make sure there’s the proper amount of air in the tires. Secondly, you need to make sure there is enough tread to avoid sliding on wet pavement.

Schneider says checking the height of the seat helps make sure the rider is comfortable when in transport. Finally, you need to make sure the handlebars, pedals, and chain are in good working order before hitting the road.

The League of American Bikers established May as National Bike Month in 1956, using the designation as a way to showcase the benefits of bicycling.
