Two Louisa County rivals will square off on the pitch today in Columbus Junction. The No. 5 Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union Wildcats (11-0 overall) will put their undefeated record on the line at home against the Wapello Indians (4-7 overall).

The key to Columbus/Winfield-Mount Union’s continued success this spring has been the play of their defense, allowing a total of five goals in 11 matches. Three of the five goals allowed by Winfield-Mount Union senior goalie Warren Krieger-Coble came during the Wildcats’ 4-3 victory versus the Iowa Mennonite School on April 7. Krieger-Coble has allowed two goals in the last nine games, posting four straight shutouts. Junior Eric Cantarero is the top goal scorer in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference North, connecting on 18 goals this spring. Senior Diego Sanchez has added eight goals for the Wildcats’, second most in the conference.

The Indians are playing their first match of the week tonight after their non-conference match at Mid-Prairie Monday evening was cancelled due to the weather.  A pair of seniors lead the Indians in goals scored. Josh and Brady Royal have put five goals a piece into the back of the net, accounting for nearly half of the team’s 22 goals score this spring.

The Southeast Iowa Super Conference boys’ match between the Wildcats and Indians is set to kick off at 4 p.m. at Columbus High School.
