At their most recent meeting the Kalona City Council discussed an increase to current water and sewer rates in the city. The proposal would see the water rate be set at a flat $11.30 plus $2.65 for every thousand gallons used. The sewer rate would be set at a flat $12.10 plus $3.00 per 1,000 gallons used. In total this would be an increase of 3.19%. An ordinance on this change will be presented at their next meeting. Council also agreed to the purchase of a water valve exerciser and generator. This would allow the city to exercise the 172 water valves and 118 fire hydrants in town. Cost of this purchase is $9,000. The purchase will be made after July 1st of this year.
