The Columbus and Iowa Mennonite School boys soccer teams met Thursday on the pitch in Columbus.

The game couldn’t be decided in regulation, overtime, or regulation penalty kicks, with Columbus finally emerging with a 2-1 victory. The Wildcats found the scoreboard first midway through the first half on a cross and header combination putting the Wildcats on top 1-0. IMS found the answer just a minute later when Anthony Villatoro sent a ball into the box and Gerardo Mendoza headed the ball past the keeper to tie the game. Things stayed tied into the break, through the entire second half and overtime periods. In penalty kicks Villatoro hit his first while IMS keeper Cole Yoder saved the Wildcats first attempt leaving it 1-0 IMS after the first round. IMS went on to miss their next three while Columbus hit two of their next three to take a 2-1 advantage into the final round. Yoder drilled his attempt for IMS to tie things again at two and Columbus missed their fifth attempt but the Wildcats found the back of the net with their sixth while IMS could not to secure the win.

Columbus got tallies on the night from Alejandro Hernandez and Diego Sanchez. With the loss IMS is now 1-2 on the season while Columbus improves to 2-0 with the win.
