Eight boys’ and girls’ track teams made the trip to Washington’s Case Field Thursday night for the running of the Demon Relays. The girls’ meet saw athletes from Columbus, Fairfield, Fort Madison, Highland, Mount Pleasant, WACO, Wapello, Washington and Winfield-Mount Union compete. The boys’ field consisted of Clear Creek-Amana, Columbus, Fairfield, Highland, Mid-Prairie, Mount Pleasant, WACO, Washington and Winfield Mount Union.

The Washington girls’ track team shined in multiple events last night. in the field events, McKayla Miller took first place in the shot put competition with a throw of 33’9.25″. Makenzi Marek finished in a four-way tie for first place in the high jump competition by clearing 4’8″. Jessie Buchholz crossed the finish line in first place in the 400 meter hurdles, recording a time of 1:14.35.

Junior Shania Boyd had a notable night for the Columbus Wildcat girls’ track team. Boyd topped the girls’ field in the long jump competition, leaping 16′ 00″. Her furtherst jump was 10 inches farther than second place finisher, Columbus’ Anna Hamilton. Boyd also finished second in the 100 meter dash and 100 meter hurdles competitions, clocking her sprint at 13.54 seconds and she cleared the hurdles in 17.42 seconds.

The Washington Demon boys’ track team had their 4×200 meter squad of Ethan Hansen, Bryce Rickey, Kyle Schindler, and Caleb Bex take first place with a time of 1:37.73. Senior Michael Ellingson cleared 5’8″ on the high jump competition, the second best leap in the field.

Highland’s Keiffer Sexton was crowned the meet’s top boys’ distance runner. His 1600 meter run was clocked at 4:46.68, and his 3200 meter performance was recorded at 10:08.44.

WACO’s Bryce Achen had a notable night for the Warriors’ boys track team. He finished in first place in the 200 meter dash, clocking a time of 23.24 seconds. He also took second place in the 100 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 11.52 seconds.

The Winfield-Mount Union Wolves left Washington with first place honors in the 4×100 meter dash. The crew of Zach Davis, Garrett Baker, Bryce Robinson, and Ross Vantiger crossed the finish line in 44.92 seconds, topping the field by half a second. Baker topped the 100 meter dash field in 11.39 seconds. Robinson won the long jump competition, vaulting himself 20′ 1″.

The meet held its first ever alumni 4×150 meter race, consisting of five men’s and women’s teams. The crew of Spencer Sorrell, Justin Greiner, Michael Hofer, and Alex Klopfenstein won the event, crossing the finish line in 1:16.63.

The Fairfield Trojans won the overall girl’ team title with 125 points, while Mount Pleasant claimed the boys’ title with 143 points.
