The Washington Demon boys’ track team returned to competition in West Burlington Monday evening. The Demons took part in the Falcon Relays, squaring off against athletes from Central Lee, Columbus, Danville, Fort Madison, Highland, Keokuk, Mediapolis, Mount Pleasant, New London, and Winfield-Mount Union. Washington finished with 43 team points, the fifth highest among the six-team Class A.

Washington senior Michael Ellingson had notable finishes for the Demons in the high jump and the 400 meter dash. His highest leap cleared 5 feet 8 inches, the third best recorded in the Class A field and earned the Demons six points. His quarter mile run clocked in at 56.93, the fourth fastest time in the A group and scored four additional points for Washington.

Junior Brennan Horak scored Washington more team points in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs. His one mile trek of 5:34.82 was the seventh best finish in the race. A disqualification by the meet’s fourth place runner, Dalton Krum of Mount Pleasant, earned Horak one point for the Demons. His two mile time of 11:35.5 is the fifth best finish, and helped Washington earn two more points.

Junior Caleb Bex earned two points for Washington in the 110 meter hurdles, crossing the finish line in 17.22, the fifth best result.

The Demon relay teams closed out the meet by scoring 20 combined points. The best finish came in the 4×200 meter event as Ethan Hansen, Tanner Murphy, Jayvon Willis, and Kyle Schindler clocked a time of 1:37.93, the third best finish in the meet and earned Washington six points. The Demons earned four points apiece as a result of fourth place finishes from the 4×100 meter, the 4×800, the sprint medley, and the 4×110 meter shuttle hurdle relay teams.

Southeast Conference rival Mount Pleasant won the overall team title, scoring 180 points.

Washington’s boys track team will next be in competition Thursday evening, participating in the Danville Invitational at Evans Field in Mount Pleasant. The Falcon Relays continue this afternoon with the running of the girls’ meet, which will include the Washington Demon squad.
