The son of Washington head wrestling coach Brent Van Weelden found himself on the medal stand Saturday at the 2016 Iowa High School Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines. Junior Trey Van Weelden (152) finished his third varsity season as the seventh best wrestler in the Class 2A tournament, wrestling a total of five matches at Wells Fargo Arena.

Two of Van Weelden’s three victories came against the same opponent. He faced Central Decatur’s Kade Kelso in the opening round, edging him by a 3-1 decision. The two saw one another again in the seventh place grapple, and Van Weelden finished the six minute battle with a 2-1 decision victory. His other win came in the second round of the consolation bracket, defeating PCM-Monroe’s Wes Cummings by 5-2 decision.

Van Weelden suffered two losses in the state tournament, dropping his championship quarterfinal against West Liberty’s Joe Kelly by 8-2 decision, and the consolation third round against Davenport Assumption’s Nick Johnson by 12-2 major decision. He finishes the season with a 48-4 overall record, eclipsing the 100 win plateau during the district tournament.

Three other Demon wrestlers qualified for the state tournament, but were eliminated on the first day of competition, they included junior Andrew Waite (126), junior Austin Hazelett (138), and freshman Tristan Westphal-Edwards (160).
