Highland’s twin brothers once again found themselves wrestling on championship Saturday at the Iowa State Individual Wrestling tournament. Bryce West (120) and Drew West (126) dueled their way into the title match of the Class 1A bracket.
Bryce West, last year’s 113 pound state champion, won this year’s 120 pound state championship by pinning Southeast Warren/Melcher-Dallas Brady Kyner 3:26 into their title bout. West finished the state tournament win two wins by fall, one by technical fall, and one by major decision. West finished his season with an undefeated 55-0 record.
Drew West’s quest for the second state championship of his varsity career came up short, falling by 15-7 major decision to Underwood’s Alex Thomsen in the 126 pound title match. West, who won the 2014 Class 1A 106 state championship, finished third in last year’s 113 pound bracket. His only loss of the tournament came against Thomsen by 5-4 decision in the championship quarterfinal round. West finishes the season 52-1 overall.
