The undefeated Washington Demon wrestling team (25-0) is receiving more recognition from coaches across the state. The latest rankings from the Iowa Wrestling Coaches and Officials Association (IWCOA) were released Thursday, and Washington jumped six spots to No. 7 in the Class 2A rankings.
Washington has yet to be bested in the 25 duals they’ve competed in this season. The Demons won their third straight Southeast Conference title on January 14, winning 48-11 over the Panthers.
Twelve Demon wrestlers enter competition this weekend with more than 20 wins under their belt. They include seniors Michael Ellingson (145; 26-7) and Bryce Rickey (170; 22-8); juniors Andrew Waite (126; 25-8), Kyle Anderson (132; 28-4), Austin Hazelett (138; 29-3), Trey Van Weelden (152; 30-2), and junior Karlton Skuball (182; 27-3); sophomore Mitchell Huisenga (285; 22-10); and freshmen Garrett Ikerd (106; 20-4), Walker Ikerd (113; 28-5), David Hora (120; 31-9), and Tristan Westphal-Edwards (160; 28-4).
The Demon wrestling team will put their unblemished record to the test today in Le Grand, competing in the East Marshall Duals. First grapples are set for 9 a.m. at East Marshall High School.
