The winter holiday break is underway for the Washington Demon wrestling team (17-0) after putting in 17 matches so far this month. The Demons capped off their pre-Christmas schedule Saturday in northeast, Iowa, battling five teams in the Dike-New Hartford Duals. Washington returned to Southeast Iowa with their undefeated dual record in tact, winning each dual by eight or more points.
The Demons opened the D-NH Duals with six pins, two major decision, two decisions, two wins by forfeit, and two losses in a 62-12 victory over Saint Ansgar. They followed up with five wins by fall, six wins by forfeit, and two losses in a 72-9 triumph against Brooklyn-Guernsey-Malcom (B.G.M.). The third dual of the day had Washington score four wins by fall, three by decision, one major decision, and one by technical fall, suffering five losses in a 42-27 defeat of Dike-New Hartford.
Bout number four of the day saw the Demons post seven pins, two wins by forfeit, a technical fall, a decision, and two losses to prevail, 68-6 versus Gladbrook-Reinbeck-North Tama- Traer-Grundy Center (GRNT-GC). Washington ended the dual tournament by earning four pins, two major decisions, and losing seven matches to edge South Winnesheik, 38-30.
Junior Trey Van Weelden enters the holiday break as the only Demon with an undefeated record on the mat, winning all 20 of his matches. Six other Washington wrestlers have won 16 or more matches, including juniors Austin Hazelett (18-1), Kyle Anderson (17-2), and Karlton Skubal (16-2), and freshmen Tristan Westphal-Edwards (18-2), Walker Ikerd (18-2), and Garrett Ikerd (18-2).
The Washington wrestling team won’t be back in competition again until January 7, returning to Southeast Conference dual action versus the Fort Madison Bloodhounds at Washington High School.
