The Mid-Prairie girls basketball team scored a big River Valley Conference road win at No. 12 Durant Saturday, 41-39 in overtime.

In a game heard on KCII, the Golden Hawks used a concentrated defensive effort on a trio of Wildcats who were averaging double figures per game, holding them to just five points in the first half while they built a 21-15 halftime lead. The Hawks would extend that lead to as many as 12 in the third quarter before the Wildcats made their move. Durant outscored Mid-Prairie 11-4 in the fourth quarter, and took a brief two point lead with a minute left in regulation before Addison Rath stepped to the line and hit a pair of free throws to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In the extra period both teams found early points from the free throw line. Mid-Prairie took a four point lead on a three point play from Alex Rath but Durant would not go away, they answered with a Shannon Telsrow basket and had the ball with 10 seconds left down two. Aubrey Werthmann’s shot to tie the game with two seconds left came up long, she got her own rebound in the lane but was stripped by Alex Rath as time expired to secure the Mid-Prairie win.

The Golden Hawks were led on the day by Addison Rath and her 13 points, Ali Butters added 11 for the Golden Hawks. With the win Mid-Prairie is now 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the River Valley Conference. They travel to West Branch on Tuesday.
